Today I went to a ceremony honoring veterans for Memorial
Day, in Simpsonville, SC. It was
wonderful. As it said in The Greenville News today, Memorial Day is
often thought of as just a day off from work or school. Often called the unofficial start of summer,
people associate it with barbecues, picnics, and spending time outdoors
(providing the weather cooperates).
While these are all great things, the true purpose of Memorial Day is to
honor our veterans,
whether on active duty, in the reserves, or retired. The
ceremony did just that.
The keynote speaker was a veteran and retired State Senator Lewis
Vaughn of South Carolina. He talked about the importance of remembering our
soldiers, especially in light of the sacrifices they made for our freedom. Steve Eager provided wonderful music to honor seven men and women who served
and are currently in law enforcement were honored Quilts of Valor. It was a beautiful ceremony and Steve’s
music was clearly hearfelt. I really
appreciated how well the veterans were honored and given the recognition they
deserve.

The service in Simpsonville is always stellar. The older I get, the more I appreciate the cost of freedom and those who served, and currently serve, to provide it. God bless America!
