The Power Of Forgiveness

Jesus tells us over and over that we need to forgive others who hurt us.  Once, he even said we need to do so nearly 500 times.  Sounds like a tall order to me.  There’s something hidden in that though.  There are at least three reasons He tells to forgive each other.

·       First, it releases the other person from the burden of being in debt to us .

·       It also restores our relationship with them and we start again with a blank slate.

·       But the most surprising result to me is that it frees us.  When we hold onto something where we’ve been wronged, it actually enslaves us. It may be all we can think about.

How about you?  What have you found happens when you forgive someone or they forgive you for something?

I know when I've been forgiven, I'm overwhelmed by grace from the person offering it. Their gift brings God much glory, and this in turn becomes yet another reason to offer the same to others. How can I not forgive when I've been forgiven of so much from my heavenly Father?

Thanks for this reminder today, Ellen. Blessings!!!

So true, Cathy. It points us back to our relationship with the Lord.

I read once that to not forgive is to build a monument to the hurt. Each time we remember how we were wronged we put another stone on the monument. And how high it can climb!

So I try to keep that visual in mind when I'm feel that I must forgive.

Being wronged builds a monument to the wrong--what a thought. I've never heard that before but it's powerful. Thanks for that, Mom.

It's interesting that you posted on this today since God has had me studying forgiveness...

Hmmm. I don't think there are any coincidences.
