 My One Word for 2013

Discipline—For the longest time I thought discipline was another word for punishment. So I didn’t like it. Who likes punishment after all? But I later learned that it also means staying on task. And that means structure. I know many people, especially writer/artist types, eschew the thought of structure, believing it robs them of any freedom in their life. I’m exactly the opposite. I thrive on structure because it keeps me on track and makes my time fly.

So I do like discipline. I just don’t do it well. That’s why my goal this year, my one word, is discipline.  Thank you, Melanie, for making my one word button. Stop by her website, http://www.onlyabreath.com/, if you’re interested in one for your blog.

In the coming weeks I’ll be sharing how my journey toward greater discipline in areas is going.

GREAT post, Ellen! I too thrive with structure but I'm also learning there's a fine balance. I like structured schedule but I also need to leave "room" for the Spirit to lead me somewhere other than what's on my "list for the day" - but even that requires discipline. :)

Melanie did a beautiful job with your button. :) Love your "one word", my friend.

I used to think the same thing, Ellen. And then God MADE me give my testimony at a women's retreat (the very first time I ever spoke at a Christian women's event--and it is what led me to developing a ministry!) and I had to study and prepare. That's when I learned the real definition of discipline.

Although He's definitely taught me a lot about discipline through the years, it's still a difficult thing for me. Thanks for the reminder today. Guess I'd better get off the computer and get to work preparing for the 65-75 people who are supposed to come for my father-in-law's 95th birthday party at our house today! :-)

You're right about making room for the Spirit to work. And listening for Him.

Discipline is a tough one, Vonda. Have a wonderful time at the party. What a wonderful celebration!

That would have been a good word for me this year too! Love the button :) My word this year is Simplify. I think it's needed in every area of my life and I will need much discipline to get there!
